The history of La Cour du Tonnelier
Before becoming a hotel and restaurant, La Cour du Tonnelier was a place bustling with activity and artisanal craftsmanship. In days gone by, this courtyard was home to coopers – the craftsmen who made the barrels used to store wine. In those days, Bouxwiller lived to the rhythm of the vineyards that surrounded the town and shaped its landscape.
In this courtyard, the sound of wood echoed beneath the coopers’ precise movements, metal hoops took shape and the barrels were lined up, ready to hold the wine from local harvests. The barrel was indispensable back then: it accompanied the wine from the vineyard to the table, a symbol of sharing and conviviality.
Over time, the vineyards have disappeared from the Bouxwiller landscape and customs have changed, but the spirit of the place has remained. Today, La Cour du Tonnelier carries on this spirit of hospitality and tradition. Where barrels were once crafted, people now share moments of rest, socialising and fine dining.
